How do repeated disturbances transfer energy and information through waves, light, and sound?

  • A wave transfers energy without transferring matter from source to receiver overall.
  • Frequency, wavelength, period, speed, and amplitude describe different measurable features of wave motion.
  • Reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference help explain light, sound, and electromagnetic phenomena.

Misconception Watch

  • Wave speed, frequency, wavelength, and amplitude are related but not the same quantity.
  • Particles in a medium do not usually travel with the wave from source to receiver; they oscillate locally.
  • A brighter light or louder sound means larger amplitude, not necessarily higher frequency.

Chapter Concept Checks

1. A water wave travels across a tank. What is mainly transferred from one side to the other?

Answer: Energy is transferred while the water particles mostly oscillate about their positions.

Distractors to watch for: The same water particles travel all the way across the tank. / Only mass is transferred, not energy. / Nothing is transferred because particles return to their starting positions.

2. If the frequency of a wave increases while wave speed stays constant, what happens to wavelength?

Answer: The wavelength decreases.

Distractors to watch for: The wavelength increases. / The wavelength stays the same. / The amplitude must become zero.

3. Which behaviour shows that waves can overlap and combine?

Answer: Interference or superposition.

Distractors to watch for: Mass density. / Chemical reaction. / Uniform acceleration.
