By Lydia Learning Objectives: Students will be able to describe and carry out tests for: starch (iodine in potassium iodide solution) reducing sugars (Benedict’s solution) protein (biuret test) fats (ethanol emulsion) Interactive Prompt: I want to design a simulation interactive for my students. Grade level: Secondary 2 Student readiness level: Mixed Abilities The simulation is based on: conducting food tests to identify the presence of starch, reducing sugars, protein, and fats in different food samples. The objective of the simulation is to: help students describe and carry out the key food tests — iodine test for starch, Benedict’s test for reducing sugars, Biuret test for protein, and ethanol emulsion test for fats — and interpret colour changes or observations to conclude which nutrients are present. While using the simulation, students should experience: selecting different liquid food substances from a rack, transferring them into test tubes with a dropper, adding the appropriate reagents, and observing the reactions. They should see realistic colour changes or emulsions forming, learn safe and systematic laboratory procedures, and infer results through visual cues and feedback. The interface should include: A virtual lab bench with labelled reagent bottles (Iodine solution, Benedict’s solution, Biuret reagent, Ethanol, Water). A rack of test substances (e.g. starch solution, glucose solution, egg white solution, oil, unknown mixtures). Droppers or pipettes for transferring small amounts of substances into clean test tubes. Action buttons such as Add Reagent, Heat in Water Bath (for Benedict’s test), Shake, and Observe. Visual indicators of results, e.g. blue-black colour for starch, brick-red precipitate for reducing sugars, violet colour for protein, white emulsion for fats. Feedback or result summary panel where students record observations and conclusions for each nutrient test. Reset or replay button to repeat tests with different samples. Optional hint or help icon explaining reagent purpose or safety reminders.
